  • A new path through the looking-glass

Exploring the mystery of the molecular handedness in nature, scientists have proposed a new experimental scheme to create custom-made mirror molecules for analysis. The technique can make ordinary molecules spin so fast that they lose their normal symmetry and shape and instead form mirrored version more

  • Nearly pure nanotubes from unusual catalyst

Growing a batch of carbon nanotubes that are all the same may not be as simple as researchers had hoped, according to Rice University scientists. Rice materials theorist Boris Yakobson and his team bucked a theory that when growing nanotubes in a furnace, a catalyst with a specific atomic arrangemen more

  • Divide and conquer: A key to creating better medicines with fewer side effects

A new study by Professors Yossi Paltiel of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Ron Naaman from the Weizmann Institute of Science describes a breakthrough technology with the power to create drugs with fewer unwanted side effects. Chemical compounds are made up of molecules. The most important mol more

A Brief Guide to Types of Isomerism in Organic Chemistry

In organic chemistry, isomers are molecules with the same molecular formula (i.e. the same number of atoms of each element), but different structural or spatial arrangements of the atoms within the molecule. The reason there are such a colossal number of organic compounds – more than 10 million – is more

  • Water instead of mineral oil

Optical active substances made from chiral catalysis form the basis of many drugs. Expensive precious-metal catalysts are required for the chemical production, which due to their thermal instability decompose at high temperatures and can therefore only be used once. The innovative process of DexLeChem GmbH makes it possible for the first time to use these precious-metal catalysts made from rhodium, ruthenium or iridium more than once, without modifying them. At the same time, reaction occurs in aqueous solutions instead of mineral-oil-based solvents, which increases the sustainability of the process. This is a milestone in catalysis and a real opportunity for the pharmaceutical industry. more

  • Molecules in the mirror

In 1871 the children‘s book “Through the Looking-Glass – And What Alice Found There” by the English author Lewis Carroll, in which Alice enters a world behind the mirror, was published. She explains to her cat: “First there’s the room you can see through the glass – that’s just the same as our drawing room, only the things go the other way. …How would you like to live in Looking-glass House, Kitty? I wonder if they’d give you milk in there? more

Axial chirality

Axial chirality Axial chirality is a special case of chirality in which a molecule does not possess a stereogenic center (the most common form of chirality in organic compounds ) but an axis of chirality - an axis about which a set of substitu ... more
