Topic world Photometry

Photometry, the measurement of light intensity in relation to interaction with molecules, is a key tool in chemistry and life sciences. It enables researchers to determine concentrations of substances in solutions, follow reaction kinetics or check the quality of samples and provides valuable data for analyses, from quality control in the laboratory to clinical diagnostics.

Far and Mid IR Spectroscopy in One Step

VERTEX FM is the first FT-IR spectrometer option which covers the complete mid and far Infrared/THz spectral ranges in a one step measurement with no gap!  In addition to the recently introduced wide range MIR-FIR beamsplitter for the VERTEX 70 series research FT-IR spectrometers now Bruker offers a new wide range MIR-FIR DLaTGS detector.  Both together are the basis of the unique VERTEX FM FIR-MIR extension for the VERTEX 70 purge and VERTEX 70v vacuum systems which provide data collection from 6000 cm-1 down to 50 cm-1 in one step without the need of any beamsplitter or detector exchange. The achievable spectral range of an FT-IR spectrometer is defined by the intersection of the efficiency ranges of the used source, beamsplitter, and detector.  The lower limit of the spectral range is very dependent upon the beamsplitter, and is typically limited to 350 cm-1 (KBr) or 200 cm-1 (CsI).  To extend the spectral range further into the far IR and THz spectral ranges one or more additional far IR beamsplitters and detectors are required and because of this the user has to manually open the access flap of the spectrometer optics bench.  Now available for the first time is Bruker’s VERTEX FM feature which combines the unique wide spectral range beamsplitter, the new wide range detector and the standard IR source to cover the spectral range from 6000 cm-1 down to 50 cm-1 in one step for all types of transmittance, reflectance and ATR measurements.  The unique VERTEX FM technology complements the automatic beamsplitter changer unit BMS-c and detector switching devices since several years available for the VERTEX 80v high end research FT-IR spectrometer. When the VERTEX 70v vacuum spectrometer is equipped with the VERTEX FM spectroscopy option, the spectral range is extended down to 10 cm-1 utilizing the external water cooled mercury arc high power lamp and automatic source switching. The extension of the mid IR towards the far IR spectral range below 400 cm-1 is of general interest for molecular vibrational analysis for inorganic and organometallic chemistry, for geological, pharmaceutical, and physical applications, polymorphs and crystallinity analysis as well as for matrix isolation spectroscopy.  The MIR-FIR ATR measurements shown here demonstrate that with the Bruker VERTEX 70 or VERTEX 70v FT-IR spectrometers, the new VERTEX FM option yields a spectral range from 4000 cm-1 to 50 cm-1 in a single very convenient data acquisition.
