Solvay increases its production capacity of sodium bicarbonate

31-May-2001

Solvay has decided to build a new sodium bicarbonate production line on the site of its Soda Ash plant at Torrelavega, Spain. With this new line, having a production capacity of 80 kt/year, the Group's annual production of sodium bicarbonate will amount to 450 kt/year. For this product, Solvay is the second largest worldwide producer and is, by far, the largest in Europe.

Sodium bicarbonate, marketed by Solvay under the brand name BICAR®, is a specialty chemical with exceptional properties. In particular, it contributes substantially to the protection of the environment with the NEUTREC® process, developed by Solvay for flue gas treatment. Moreover, BICAR® can be used in several pharmaceutical and paramedical applications, such as the hemodialysis, as well as in many industrial processes. Sodium bicarbonate is also used in the human and animal food industries, in detergents, fire extinguishing, etc.

New applications developed by Solvay contribute to the strong growth of BICAR® sales, in Europe and in the other regions of the world.

The new Spanish production line, operational in October 2002, will complement the existing production of Torrelavega unit in serving the Spanish market and contribute to the development of export sales.

As Torrelavega is located close to the seaport of Santander (Spain), BICAR® exports will have the possibility to be combined with the high volume exports of soda ash and benefit from the competitiveness of this supply chain.
