NOVEL ANTI-WEAR ADDITIVE DEVELOPED FOR THE INDUSTRIAL LUBRICANT MARKET BY CROMPTON PETROLEUM ADDITIVES

11-Jul-2001
Crompton Corporation's Petroleum additives business has developed a novel over-based crystalline calcite sulfonate detergent that provides a dramatic improvement in extreme pressure and anti-wear performance, as well as good solubility and low viscosity, for use in industrial lubricant applications. CalcinateTM C300 CS exhibits enhanced extreme pressure characteristics with strong demulsifier and acid-scavenger features. It can be used as a chlorine replacement in coolants, drawing and stamping compounds. "We identified a growing market need for a lubricant additive capable of providing outstanding anti-wear properties," said Dr. David J. Sikora, technology director for Crompton's Petroleum Additives business. "As a result, we developed a unique and patented process that solubilizes crystalline calcite in an over-based detergent, thereby producing a set of performance characteristics never before made available to the industrial lubricant market." The Petroleum Additives Canadian team of Ron Muir, Dr. Theo Eliades, Wayne Mackwood, Ken Niece, Bill Olson, and Jim Horner were recently recognized at Crompton Corporation's 2001 Technical Achievement Awards ceremony for their ground-breaking work in conceptualizing, developing and commercializing this novel process. Crompton's Petroleum Additives business offers one of the most comprehensive lines of components to lubricant additive formulators and manufacturers of products for the transportation, industrial, grease, and fuels markets. Uniroyal Chemical and Witco lubricant components allow customers to formulate products that meet demanding new industry specifications driven by higher performance and advanced environmental requirements.
