PerkinElmer and Vivascience/Sartorius announce partnership to develop innovative platform for biomarker screening and discovery

06-Aug-2004

PerkinElmer Inc., a leading provider of drug discovery, life science research, and analytical solutions and Vivascience AG, leading supplier of products and technology solutions for protein purification and analysis and member of the Sartorius Group, today announced that they have entered into a collaborative partnership and distribution agreement in biomarker screening and discovery.

Under the terms of the agreement, Vivascience will supply its patented membrane adsorber chromatography technology for capturing biomarkers to PerkinElmer. PerkinElmer will then combine the technology with its proprietary methods for elution to create fractionation and biomarker sample preparation kits. The kits will be integrated with PerkinElmer's automated platform for biomarker screening, which includes the MultiProbe II for automating the kits and the prOTOF(TM) 2000 MALDI O-TOF mass spectrometer for detecting the biomarkers.

The PerkinElmer biomarker Screening Platform is meeting with increasing excitement and acceptance in the biomarker research community. Kevin Rosenblatt, a leading researcher in Biomarker research and clinical proteomics at the University of Texas Southwestern, recently purchased a prOTOF and commented "The combination of ultra-high mass accuracy and superb resolution over a broad mass range in the prOTOF, coupled with an automated biomarker enrichment platform, make the PerkinElmer approach an ideal biomarker discovery and screening platform."

In addition, biomarker-based research and diagnostic companies are rapidly adopting this technology platform. Recently, Predictive Diagnostics, Inc.* (PDI), a leading clinical proteomics company in the field of predictive diagnostics,- has adopted the prOTOF as part of their BAMF(TM) in silico biomarker platform and will have early access to the biomarker sample prep kits throughout the end of the year. Guy della Cioppa, Senior Vice President of Business Development at Eclipse said: "PDI* is currently expanding its new facility. We have adopted the PerkinElmer Biomarker Platform strategy as part of the development and implementation of new instrumentation and tools for our Clinical Proteomics Program."

"By working with a market leader like Vivascience/Sartorius and taking advantage of both proven technologies and new developments across multiple product platforms, PerkinElmer's enhanced capabilities in biomarkers will bring substantial benefits to the customers we serve," said Peter Coggins, Ph.D., president of PerkinElmer Life and Analytical Sciences. "This enhanced focus on biomarker discovery extends our well established platform in protein differential expression utilizing our 2D gel imaging, analysis and robotics platform,"

Vivascience's/Sartorius' unique MA technology, in contrast to traditional resins and beads, features a rigid format that makes it highly reproducible and robust. The technology is also easy to work with, particularly when paired with PerkinElmer instruments and hardware.

"We are excited to pair our unparalleled MA technology with PerkinElmer's extensive range of proteomics expertise," said Matthias Keff, CEO of Vivascience. "We are confident that the combined strength of PerkinElmer's state-of-the-art proteomic hardware and Vivascience's portfolio of membrane technology solutions will add significant value to the proteomics market."

The prOTOF 2000 is the cornerstone of the High Content Proteomics(TM) solution, a comprehensive approach to proteomics research pioneered by PerkinElmer. Using advanced, innovative technologies, like the prOTOF 2000 MALDI MS, PerkinElmer has developed a suite of tools that achieve maximum meaningful data from any sample, improving results and reproducibility.
