Organon continues to invest in Newhouse Research Centre

New State-of-the-Art automated compound store to transform Organon global drug discovery

19-May-2006
Organon continues to invest in its research facilities in Scotland with the official opening of an 8 million Euro state-of-the-art Automated Compound Store (ACS) to house the Organon compound library. "The Organon compound library is one of our most precious assets that will fuel our future pipeline. The ACS represents an important strategic investment that will transform our drug discovery efforts and make a substantial difference to the success of the Organon discovery research globally," said Toon Wilderbeek, President Organon International. The new investment is part of multi-million Euro program that has transformed the Organon drug discovery research complex at Newhouse since 1996. The state-of-the-art ACS, supplied by REMP of Switzerland, combines perfect storage conditions, with an automated system to track, prepare and retrieve compounds. The ACS will co-ordinate the supply of up to 10 million samples a year for drug discovery screening at the Organon research sites globally and can also be used in conjunction with external collaborators. Chris Hill, Senior Vice President of Research, Newhouse explained: "The ACS allows maximal exploitation of our compound library. It enables us to retrieve compounds on an individual basis allowing researchers to cherry pick those they want to test. This allows the screening of selected compounds at some valuable targets that had previously not been possible, due to limitations of assay format or cost. Quite simply, the new system, along with ongoing investments to allow more targeted high throughput screening will transform the way in which we undertake early screening activities in research ultimately resulting in more high quality leads."
