Mass flow measurement for gasses

Accurate and repeatable measurement with thermal dispersion technology

by Magnetrol International N.V.

Accurate measurement of natural gas to the boiler is critical for proper operation of the burner management system. Also for flaring it is ideal to monitor the gas flow towards the actual burner.

Oxygen flow allowing proper aeration in water treatment plants needs to be followed to maximize its effect on the water. These are just a very limited number of examples where measuring mass flow of gasses is crucial or has to be monitored accurately. A solution is using thermal dispersion technology. In thermal dispersion technology two resistance temperature detectors (RTD) are fixed at the end of a probe.

These sensors are protected to prevent damage when inserted into a pipe or channel. One sensor measures the ambient temperature; the second will vary in temperature to make sure that the temperature difference between the two sensors remains constant. The energy needed to do this is measured and recalculated to a mass flow of the known gas passing through the pipe or channel.

Based on this technology the Enhanced Model TA2 mass flow meter provides reliable mass measurement for air and gas flow applications. The powerful, yet easy to use, electronics are contained in a compact flameproof enclosure. The TA2 is available with both insertion probes as well as flow body design for smaller pipe sizes.

Main features:

  • The E-TA2 is calibrated at the factory for the type(s) of gas and the specified flow rate and is configured in line with the specific application information. The result is an instrument which can be installed and immediately be placed into operation without field set up.
  • Calibration/Direct mass flow measurement for two  different gasses
  • No need for temperature correction. As the temperature is constantly measured the device automatically corrects the mass flow measurement
  • High turndown ratio 100:1.
  • NIST traceable calibrations.
  • Flow, temperature and totalized flow available over HART®.
  • Process temperatures up to +200 °C (+400 °F), pressure ratings up to 100 bar
  • Probe can be field replaced.
  • Optional pulse output plus second mA output which can be used for temperature or different flow range (passive output only).

Main applications:

  • Combustion air
  • Digester/bio-gas
  • Compressed air/gas
  • Vent lines/flare headers
  • Natural gas
  • Hydrogen piping
  • Aeration lines
