The GFD® bench top nutsche filter dryer overcomes challenges with commonly used methods of Buchner filtration and oven drying. The new GFD efficiently performs laboratory process development combining filtration, solids isolation, cake washing and vacuum drying all in one step. The final product is also fully recovered through an unique removable filtration basket.

With new features such as data logging, accurate control of the agitator speed and recipe input, the GFD can be autonomous and run processes without human intervention. You can save all of the process data and export for further analysis and repeatability.

Process control and automation, even of the agitator raise and lower mechanism is performed via the HMI/PLC display for a direct and easy product usability.

Now more compact and providing enhanced ergonomics the new GFD can be integrated in fume hoods while maintaining good process visibility, batch homogeneity and reduced product exposure.

Due to its direct scale-up abilities, the GFD is ideal for feasibility studies and trials before investing in a large scale agitated nutsche filter dryer. The GFD Vessel Kits are available in glass borosilicate 3.3, stainless steel 316l and alloy C22 ranging from the 0.3l Mini Lab GFD, 2l Lab GFD up to the 10l Maxi Lab GFD.

How Does It Work?
The slurry enters the vessel through one of the nozzles located on the vessel lid. During the filtration phase, vacuum is pulled at the bottom of the vessel whilst the unique filter basket collects the product. 

It is then possible to wash the cake, again using a nozzle of choice on the lid to introduce the solvent and the heated vessel jacket if required. It is common practice to apply pressure to the top of the filter cake during filtration whilst the bi-directional motor is running in a clockwise direction to smooth the cake. Optimal filtration is achieved in this way as you can pressure filter with no cracks in the cake.

The heated jacket is then used to heat the vessel for the drying phase. The vessel is rated to temperatures between -25°C and 150°C, and it is not uncommon for the GFD to be also used for the filtration of unstable products at low temperatures.

The bi-directional motor is lowered into the cake during this phase and is now used in the anti-clockwise direction to dig into the cake thus resulting in the homogeneous drying of the product.

Technology Transfer
During laboratories studies and R&D product development, chemists need to work on similar technology to evaluate and determine the parameters discussed above. Traditional filtration and drying methods usually found in laboratories are Buchner filtration, centrifuge and oven drier. These technologies cannot be transferred successfully onto commercial production scale. Therefore, PSL launched a smaller agitated nutsche filter dryer to provide same technology for less than 200 grams batch of final product.

Contained GFD Options: The Laboratory FilterBox Technology

The FilterBox is a new technology consisting of a GFD being completely integrated within a PSL isolator, providing high containment when handling highly potent APIs and other highly active or cytotoxic compounds.

The FilterBox achieves containment to nanogram levels protecting both the product and the operator during operations including charging, sampling, filtration, drying and discharging.
