CORONA PLUS - Fast measurements in the VIS/NIR spectral range

Diode Array Spectrometer for measurements of reflectance/transmittance - On-line, In-line or in the laboratory

by Carl Zeiss MicroImaging GmbH

The CORONA PLUS is an industrial reflection/transmission head for measuring applications in the VIS/NIR range. A spectral sensor and micro-computer are already integrated. A combination of modern diode array technology, high-precision optics, fast and high-resolution electronics resulted in a measuring head for different measuring tasks in process monitoring, quality control and in the laboratory.

The total elimination of moving mechanical components offers a very high degree of reliability and permanent correctness of the spectral wavelength. And all this in combination with a scanning time in the milliseconds range and simultaneous detection of a wavelength range from 340 nm to more than 2200 nm.

The option of parallel detection and evaluation of the visible wavelength range and the Near Infrared also enables the CORONA PLUS to tackle new types of measuring concepts, such as simultaneous inline measurement of color and moisture on running conveyor belts. Application specific measuring geometry and accessories allow the performance of a wide variety of measuring tasks: Color, layer thickness, determination of moisture, concentration of ingredients in foods, or a combination of these applications.

The first CORONA PLUS systems for the measurement of optical properties such as reflection, transmission, color and coating thickness of transparent samples and coatings have been specially designed for use under industrial conditions and are now available. The combination of the latest polychromator technologies with excellent optics and fast, low-noise electronics provides the foundation for maximum sensitivity, linearity and a high dynamic range.

The outstanding features of CORONA PLUS are particularly beneficial where speed, sturdiness, reliability and performance are vital, e.g. for complex, fast measurements in quality and process inspection in architectural and automotive glass production or in the plastics, coating and solar energy industries.

Compared to its predecessor, CORONA PLUS features a new optical design that provides higher sensitivity and shorter measuring times. The new PGS polychromators enable higher resolution and an extension of the wavelength range up to 2.2 µm. Further benefits include a longer service life of the light sources in the NIR, less noise, excellent linearity and the use of modern communication interfaces. The reduced power consumption results in less thermal buildup and therefore higher stability. Most versions are offered either as single or dual beam systems.

The first system of the new generation to enter the market is the CORONA PLUS REMOTE for VIS and VIS/NIR applications, which is optionally available as a single or dual beam version for use with external measuring heads followed by the CORONA PLUS 45 NIR with integrated measuring head with 0°/45° geometry for measuring of diffuse reflection.
