BP Brings Clean Fuel To Europe's Buses

07 May 2003 - Today BP participated in the launch of a fleet of hydrogen-fuelled buses to be introduced to cities across Europe. BP is the major supplier of hydrogen and associated refuelling infrastructure to this bus fleet.

The buses and refuelling infrastructure are being introduced as part of the Clean Urban Transport for Europe (CUTE) demonstration project, which is part funded by the European Commission. Within this project BP is providing hydrogen-refuelling infrastructure in London, Barcelona and Porto; and is working with partners to refuel buses in Stuttgart and Hamburg. In a sister project, BP will provide refuelling infrastructure in Perth, Australia which is the only city in the southern hemisphere to be involved in this demonstration.

Construction will begin at the Barcelona site this month. Other sites will open to coincide with arrival of the buses, expected at the European sites in 2003.

"The scale and reach of this demonstration project is exceptional," said John Mogford, Group Vice President for BP Renewables and Alternatives.

"Hydrogen holds great promise as a clean fuel, however there are many challenges to be faced before it is widely used," Mogford said. "Demonstration projects such as CUTE provide an opportunity to work on these challenges in partnership with other industries and with government. We are very pleased to be part of this exciting project."

BP is a lead member of hydrogen demonstration projects around the globe. The company already has a site in Germany (at Munich airport) and is a partner in the California Fuel Cell Partnership refuelling site in Sacramento, US. Additional hydrogen refuelling sites are planned in Berlin, Singapore and in Los Angeles.

Notes to editor BP p.l.c. is one of the world's largest petroleum and petrochemicals groups. BP is actively involved in developing the Hydrogen Economy through strategic partnerships and demonstration projects. BP's efforts are focused on the production, distribution and retailing of hydrogen.
