Solar silicon producer Joint Solar Silicon celebrates topping-out ceremony on the construction of its new plant

10 Aug 2007 - On the premises of Degussa GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of RAG, the heads of Joint Solar Silicon GmbH & Co. KG (JSSi), Freiberg, celebrated the topping-out ceremony on the construction of its solar silicon plant. JSSI, the owner of the plant, is right on schedule with the project. If everything continues to proceed as planned, then production will start in the coming year with an initial annual capacity of 850 metric tons of solar silicon.

"A novel process allows us to achieve a significantly improved energy balance," confirms Dr. Alfred Oberholz, member of RAG's Management Board and deputy chairman at Degussa. "Compared to other processes, ours needs only 10 percent of the energies used to date." A double-digit million euro figure was invested in the plant. JSSI is a joint venture between Degussa GmbH, Düsseldorf (51 percent), and SolarWorld AG, Bonn.
