Standard software for chemometric spectroscopy at work

Spectroscopic measurement and the use of chemometrics to evaluate spectral data are both well-proven technologies for routine analysis, wherever rapid and non-destructive determination of qualitative or quantitative sample properties is needed.

With the SL product line SensoLogic has developed a complete software solution for chemometric spectroscopy comprising a set of modules covering calibration development, routine measurement and other special tasks using a common standardized data structure.

A single physical file, the Chemometric Project File (CPF), contains all relevant data sets and structures including:

  • Samples with ID and assigned physical or chemical reference data
  • Spectra, organized in series and libraries
  • User-configurable transformations for spectra pre-treatment
  • Calibration models, ready to use as methods and applications

With the SL Calibration Workshop these data are managed and used to develop calibration models for quantitative and qualitative analysis. The free combination of MLR and factor models with their particular outlier diagnostics ensures the best possible analytical results. Calibrations are combined to finished applications which can be applied immediately by the SL Predictor for predictions with unknown samples.

The SL Predictor is a program module dedicated for simple and reliable routine measurement for qualitative or quantitative analysis. The latest version 1.2 has been extended by a new driver interface for Polytec PSS spectrometers. Like the other supported instruments such as Corona (Zeiss), TIDAS (J+M) or Tristan (m.u.t.), they now can be operated from a common user-interface using multivariate models from the SL Calibration Workshop. Driver interfaces for more instruments are planned in cooperation with their respective manufacturers.

With the new SL Utilities 2.0 extended import routines and several additional programs for spectral data processing are now available. The intelligent Subset Selection tool will be particularly useful for users with high numbers of samples in calibration development or adjustment: it reduces the number of reference measurements needed, thereby saving time and costs. A new convenient Database Viewer (see fig. 2) provides quick and flexible access to the CPF Project Database.

The SL Application Development Kit is a collection of function libraries for using CPF files in other software applications.

To assist users to take maximum advantage of the SL programs, SensoLogic provides training courses aimed at people who wish to acquire the necessary skills for development of reliable calibrations but do not have time to learn the detailed theory behind it. Training is available in both German and English.

Further details can be found at SensoLogic's website, in the "SL News" newsletter, and are also available on request. Demo versions of SL software can be obtained as well on the Download page of the website.
