BASF Geismar Site Earns Environmental Leadership Recognition

Governor's Program Recognizes Initiative in Environmental Performance

15-Jul-2002

GEISMAR, La., July 12, 2002 - BASF Corporation's Geismar production site has been recognized with a state pollution prevention award for a voluntary program initiated in 2001 that is converting millions of pounds of waste into a useful product.

The Pollution Prevention Achievement Award was presented to BASF as part of the Governor's Environmental Leadership Awards Program at the state Capitol this week. The award recognizes BASF for its "Aniline Recovery from Residue Project" -- a process that greatly reduces the amount of waste incinerated at the site.

"The state has a responsibility to protect its citizens and enforce environmental laws. That task is made easier when industries take the initiative by pushing environmental performance beyond what those laws require," said Gov. M.J. "Mike" Foster Jr. during the awards presentation.

The new process recovers aniline from aniline residue, a by-product that results from the production of aniline. About 4.4 million pounds per year of aniline residue were formerly burned in the BASF Geismar site's aniline incinerator. The new process uses a "wiped film evaporator" to separate aniline from the aniline/aniline residue mixture. After further processing, the recovered aniline becomes a useful product.
