L-Threonine capacity doubled at Degussa AG

03-Sep-2001
The Feed additives Business Unit of Degussa AG, Düsseldorf, has invested in a new production line for L-Threonine at its plant in Slovenská Lupca, Slovakia. This expansion is considered to be the first step in the companys’ strategy to further ramp up production capacity of L-Threonine. The new facility went on stream in early May, and total annual production capacity now exceeds 10,000 metric tons. Due to the favourable cost base – by using fermentation technology developed in-house – Degussa is confident to enhance their strong position in the world market. The expansion came as a response to the fast growing global demand in recent years. Between 1997 and 2000 threonine demand has more than doubled in Europe and it is anticipated to have a similar development in Southeast Asia in the next few years. “The new capacity secures future supply to our existing customer base and allows Degussa to expand its global threonine business even further,” explains Marketing Director Mr. Matthias Hau. “This expansion project will strengthen our position as the world leader in producing the three most important essential amino acids for the feed industry: DL-methionine, L-Lysine (Biolys® 60) and L-Threonine,“ explains Dr. Hubert Wennemer, the President of the Feed Additives Business Unit. L-Threonine is an essential amino acid and a firm ingredient in all modern feeding concepts. L-Threonine feed grade from Degussa AG with a purity greater than 98.5% is added to the diet of pigs and poultry in order to optimize the dietary amino acid balance to the requirements of the animal. As a result of this supplementation, threonine reduces both the cost and the environmental impact of livestock farming.
