February 28, 2002 ? DuPont Canada and Technology Partnerships

Canada (TPC) have announced a four-year program to develop key components for the emerging fuel cell industry. TPC, a technology investment fund aimed at maintaining and growing the technology base and capabilities of Canadian industry, is investing USD 19 million in DuPont Canada's fuel cell research efforts.

"This investment by the federal government will promote our continuing development of fuel cell technology in Canada," said DuPont Canada Chairman, President and CEO Dave Colcleugh. "It's another example of DuPont Canada's long-term commitment to rapid sustainable growth and innovation in business and technology. It also fits in perfectly with the company's core values -- including respect for the environment - and our primary growth strategies."

David Peet, global business director for DuPont Fuel Cells, said: "This business and government partnership through DuPont Canada is an important part of the DuPont global effort to advance fuel cell technology and expand our offering beyond Nafion® membranes into fuel cell components, and highlights the closely integrated network of DuPont business and technical resources focused on this important growth opportunity. Industry and consumers both have high interest in and expectations for fuel cell technology. Focused technology development and incremental successful commercialization of fuel cells are key to driving progress."

The company's unitized fuel cell development program will concentrate initially on direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) applications. DuPont Canada is creating a pilot development facility within its existing Research and Business Development Centre in Kingston, Ontario, to evaluate and test products for performance and durability in simulated fuel cell environments. Fuel cells are expected to find application in areas ranging from portable electronics, to off-grid stationary power, to longer-term use in passenger vehicles.

Applying science to fulfill human needs - such as the need for alternative power sources such as fuel cells - is part of the DuPont integrated science strategy for achieving sustainable growth.
