Rotational viscometry is the key to steady quality of your chemicals

Boost the processability of your samples and let product rejections be a thing of the past. The consistency of your products play a major role in production as well as end-application. The thickness of paint and coatings specifies whether it can be applied with a brush, a roller, a sprayer, or other methods. Furthermore, paint needs to be applied uniformly to the surface without uneven ridges to satisfy customers. Thinking of adhesives viscosity mainly influences the penetration into surface gaps. Learn how easy rotational viscosity tests help you to achieve steady product quality:
Step 1: Find your rotational viscometer model

Choose according to the viscosity of your sample:

  • L for low-viscosity samples like solvent, ink, oil, liquid wax
  • R for medium-viscosity samples like paint and coatings, adhesives
  • H for high-viscosity samples like glue, wall putty

Step 2: Ensure that your instrument is properly aligned

ViscoQC 100/300 checks itself for proper instrument alignment before, during, and after each measurement and actively warns if this is not the case. Therefore, proper concentricity during rotation is given and reproducible results are achieved.

Step 3: Find your spindle for precise viscosity measurement

For determining the viscosity according to e.g. ISO 2555 or ASTM D2196, L or RH spindles have to be used in a 600 mL Griffin beaker. If only a small sample amount (< 20 mL) is available, concentric cylinder measuring systems are available (ISO 3219). All spindles from Anton Paar are equipped with the unique Toolmaster™    for automatic spindle detection to avoid manual selection errors from a spindle list. Hints: A disposable cup version is available to minimize cleaning. L and RH spindles can be also used in your own large container to minimize sample preparation.

Step 4: Prepare your chemical samples accordingly

If applicable prepare your sample according to a standard or test method like ASTM D2196 for paint and coatings. Avoid air bubbles when filling as they behave like solids and will increase your viscosity reading. Viscosity is mainly influenced by temperature and the temperature will influence e.g. the curing reaction. For this purpose, Anton Paar's unique air-counter-cooled Peltier temperature device PTD 80 only starts the measurement if the sample has reached the set temperature e.g. 60 °C (T-Ready™). And the best: It does not only save an enormous amount of space as no cooling liquid is required but also reduces maintenance to a minimum.

Step 5: Start your measurement

Easily attach your spindle on ViscoQC with a user-friendly magnetic coupling. ViscoQC features a unique measurement mode “TruMode™" that automatically brings you to the ideal measurement range and recommends smaller/bigger spindles if it can't be reached with your setup. For advanced viscosity testing with ViscoQC 300 the software package V-Curve can be added. Perform a speed ramp test and analyze the flow behavior of your paint with e.g. the “Shear thinning index" or perform a step test (3ITT) which allows you to analyze the sagging and leveling behavior of your paint.

Step 6: Adapt your chemical ingredients

After a successful viscosity measurement with the intelligent rotational viscometer ViscoQC 100/300 from Anton Paar a perfect consistency of your chemicals is guaranteed. If required, add ingredients like solvents to e.g. adhesives to reach your required viscosity and satisfy your customers.
