Single Pumping Stations or Network Solutions?

For vacuum supply in the laboratory, both individual pumps and pumping units as well as vacuum network solutions are feasible options. In an in-house network, all work stations in a building are supplied by a large, centralised vacuum pump. However, in-house networks have several disadvantages for daily work. The two-way influence and contamination from back-flowing gases can be difficult to avoid in such systems. This not only disrupts processes, but it can also present a safety risk such as the formation of unintended explosive mixtures or the release of infectious materials. In addition, such pumps are frequently oversized because they need to be designed to cater for maximum operation. Also the fact that the pump is in operation around the clock must also be taken into consideration, thus resulting in unnecessarily high investment and energy costs.

The better modern alternative are local networks in which the vacuum pump supplies only a certain number of work stations in one room. Also in comparison to individual pump supply in which each work station is equipped with a separate vacuum pump, as well as reducing the procurement costs, a local network solution also reduces both the maintenance and energy consumption. At the same time, the noise emissions and space needed are smaller because signifcantly fewer pumps are needed for daily work.

The decision between single pump systems and a local network solution depends on various factors. For example these include: The number of work stations, the applications used and the requirements for vacuum regulation. Therefore, discussion of the framework conditions and various options with an expert in advance is highly recommended.

VACUU·LAN Vacuum Network for Laboratories

VACUU.LAN, VACUUBRAND®’s local vacuum network, is continuously evolving together with its customers to adapt to modern laboratory facility systems. The aim is a steady improvement of the vacuum supply in education, research and industry laboratories. The idea is both efficient and simple: Several laboratory workstations are using one efficient and chemical resistant diaphragm pump. Each workstation gets vacuum through a VACUU.LAN module whose integrated non-return-valve considerably decreases reciprocal influence with high efficacy. Chemical resistant PTFE-tubings and tubing connectors link the network server pump to the workstation modules. Such VACUU.LAN networks can ultimately achieve vacuum levels of down to 2 mbar. The wide variety of available connecting modules offers individual and space-saving solutions for all common vacuum applications. VACUU.LAN is highly flexible and can either be planned and integrated into new yet to be installed laboratory furniture or retrofitted to already existing laboratories. The pump’s automatic network control provides vacuum on demand, thus providing both environmental and budgetary savings. A wide range of accessories such as coolant-free post-condensation, liquid level monitoring of collection flasks, and interfaces for remote monitoring of pump operation additionally increase the process safety.
