Novotext

Novotext is a trade name for cotton textile-phenol epoxy resin, essentially cotton-reinforced Bakelite. It was often used in car engines for gear wheels used to provide a direct drive to the cam shaft as it is flexible and quiet-running. The material is known under various other names such as Turbax, Resitex and Celoron (see U.S. Patent 1,812,552 ). In bar form it is also known as Cartatextiel and Ferrozell and in sheet form as Harex, Tufnol and Micarta.

Tufnol is a Patented trade mark. It is a phenolic Paper which is a composite material. The two material together put out their good qualities and thus the new material formed derives the best features of the parent materials. Being phenolic paper it is water resistant. It is used for lining in loaded bearings where lubricating oil use is not feasible. Rather it can be lubricated with water. It has very less friction characteristics. And thus it finds its use in dusty, chemically sensitive environments. The ability to work without oil makes it a preferable choice for design engineers. But the preparation is not as environment friendly. Production is done by CSM technique.
