Phase constant

In electromagnetic theory, the phase constant (also wavenumber) is the imaginary component of the propagation constant for a plane wave. It is represented by the symbol β.

\beta = \frac{2\pi}{\lambda}

For a lossless transmission line:

\beta = \omega \sqrt{LC}
