Nordic R1a Y-DNA Project

Nordic R1a Y-DNA Project is a private initiative originating in Norway, which main objective is to use DNA-sequencing of the male Y-cromosome for indicating kinship between members of the haplogroup R1a.

Contents

Purpose

The project objectives are:

  • To create a base of knowledge on the use of Y-DNA sequencing for detecting relationship between members of the haplogroup R1a, primarily of ethnic nordic origin, secondly of northern european origin
  • Spread information of its work through various sufficing sources, eg. wikipedia.no and familytreedna.com
  • Broadcasting knowledge of the haplogroup R1a in general
  • Recruiting members of the haplogroup R1a for contributing to a R1a database of greater significance
  • Contributing in the progress of refining subclades of the R1a

Status

Background

The inspiration of this project can be attributed to the discussion group (in norwegian) DNA og slektsforskning on DIS-Norges Slektsforum, where a group of its own emanated; The yDNA Haplogroup R1a in Norway.

A process basically based on e-mail exchage carried on consolidating the project, and the project baseline and objectives were drawn out. Furthermore, a list of references to relevant literature and links to relevant resources on the web came to be shared among the initial participants.

What do we know about haplogroup R1a?

R1a (Y-DNA) is one specific sequence of nucleotides in the male Y-cromosome and a Y-cromosome haplogroup identified by the genetic marker M17. R1a rose as a specific mutation in one specific individuals DNA. This individual is considered the origin of all individuals later to carry the R1a, and is decending from haplogroup R1.

R1a is a subclade of Haplogroup R1 (M173).

R1a in Norway

Dupuy 389i + 3 = FamilyTreeDNA 389i

Dupuy 389i + 3 + 389ii = FamilyTreeDNA 389ii
