  • Fraunhofer FEP presents new vacuum coating processes

The Fraunhofer Institute for Electron Beam and Plasma Technology FEP presents a new and highly efficient processes for coating of large areas, such as arcPECVD (hollow cathode arc PECVD), plasma-activated high-rate evaporation using a dual crucible and the sputtering of Indium-free transparent condu more

  • Diamond as a building material for optical circuits

The application of light for information processing opens up a multitude of possibilities. However, to be able to adequately use photons in circuits and sensors, materials need to have particular optical and mechanical properties. Researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) have now f more

  • Fraunhofer IKTS partners with Mayur REnergy Solutions Inc. to develop SOFC systems for India

To provide clean and green energy alternatives at an affordable cost, Mayur Renergy Solution (a Pune- & Boston-based corporation) in January 2013 signed a contract with the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems IKTS, Germany, to develop Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) products for t more

  • Measuring particle size using modern laser diffraction techniques

Many different techniques have been devised for determining particle size distribution, but for a wide range of industries laser diffraction has become the preferred choice. Laser diffraction, alternatively referred to as Low Angle Laser Light Scattering (LALLS), can be used for the non-destructive analysis of wet or dry samples, with particles in the size range 0.02 to 2000 micron and has inherent advantages which make it preferable to other options for many different materials. more

  • Particle sizing with static laser scattering

When determining particle sizes a wide variety of techniques are used in which sieving may be the most popular. Sieving is a relatively simple technique, despite the fact that of course different instrumental approaches can be used. The main advantages of sieving are the low price of the instrumentation and the fact that different fractions of the original sample can be prepared for further use. On the other hand, sieving is very time consuming and yields results only for a very limited number of particle sizes. Results from sieving typically vary due to several factors: the method of moving the sieve, the period of operation, the number of particles on the sieve and some physical properties such as shape or stickiness of the sample. In addition, the actual size of the mesh gaps of the sieves can have large variations from the nominal size more

  • Magnetotransport and induced superconductivity in Bi based three‐dimensional topological insulators

Abstract The surface of a three‐dimensional (3D) topological insulator is conducting and the topologically nontrivial nature of the surface states is observed in experiments. It is the aim of this paper to review and analyze experimental observations with respect to the magnetotransport in Bi more
