Thermo Electron Presents the World's First Hybrid Ion Trap-Fourier Transform Mass Spectrometer

03-Jun-2003

Thermo Electron Corporation recently introduced the Finnigan LTQ FT, which combines the most advanced Ion Trap and Fourier Transform ICR technologies. For the first time, high-resolution, accurate mass determinations, and MS n are available for high-throughput analysis on a single instrument.

The Finnigan LTQ FT consists of three major components: a new-generation, linear ion trap mass spectrometer, a high-transmission ion guidance system, and an ICR analyzer based on a 7 Tesla super conductive magnet. This design, combined with novel control electronics and data analysis software, forms a fully integrated, easy-to-use analytical powerhouse.

High mass resolution using the Finnigan LTQ FT now enables the life scientist to analyze complex mixtures in a fraction of the time. Because the determination of accurate mass is based on the measurement of single ion species, components of a mixture can be characterized simultaneously, eliminating the need for further development or analysis time.

The accurate mass capability of the Finnigan LTQ FT allows the unequivocal determination of the elemental composition of an ion for complete structural elucidation. This accelerates the analysis in pharmaceutical research, drug discovery, and metabolic studies, enabling the user to achieve precise results in a short time frame.

The concept of MS n was first introduced on the Finnigan LCQ ., with n equaling up to 10. The power of MS n on the Finnigan LTQ FT extends structural elucidation by another dimension, beyond technology previously available.
