Max-Planck-Institut für Metallforschung

Since its foundation in 1921 as the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Metals Research, the Max Planck Institute for Metals Research has been a leading research institute in the field of materials science. Up to 400 scientists, including around 150 guests from abroad, carry out the research work, supported by technicians and other staff. The scientists are organized in eight departments, each headed by a Director and Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society (Prof. Dr. Siegfried Dietrich, Prof. Dr. Manfred Rühle, Prof. Dr. Ir. Eric Mittemeijer, Prof. Dr. Gisela Schütz, Prof. Dr. Joachim Spatz - currently three departments do not have a Director). Recently, four junior research groups have been established at the MPI-MF. These smaller teams are designed to stay at the institute for five years and are led by excellent young researchers.
