DSM and University of Leuven win EPSC Award 2001
A team of DSM (the Netherlands) and the University of Leuven (Belgium) did win today 'The European Process Safety Centre Award 2001' awarded by the European Process Safety Centre (EPSC). It happened during the 10th international symposium on Loss Prevention and Safety Promotion in the Process Industries. The award, which recognizes a significant contribution to process safety in Europe, was entitled 'Auto-ignition hazard of mixtures of ammonia, hydrogen, methane and air in an urea plant'. This is the first occasion that a team has been selected for the award.
Prize-giving ceremony
Volker Pilz, EPSC Chairman, who presented the engraved crystal glass award and individual certificates to the team, made the presentation during the plenary session in Stockholm. In his presentation speech, Volker Pilz said: 'This year, EPSC would like to recognize a team comprising both industrial and academic engineering excellence whose close co-operation in the area of explosion safety dates back to the early nineties. Most of team's work concentrates on improving the safety performance of urea manufacturing plants of which there are several hundred examples around the world. The integration of experimental and theoretical work has laid the foundation of updated engineering guidelines for urea plants as well as the tangible facility of a new explosion laboratory, which is to be built in Leuven next year'.
EPSC
The European Process Safety Centre is a not-for-profit organization founded by the European Federation of Chemical Engineering and managed by the Institution of Chemical Engineers. Its offices are based in the UK, and the Centre currently has 46 members drawn from industry, consultancy, research organizations and academia. The Centre's aim is to increase knowledge and encourage the development of best practice in process safety and related areas across Europe. This award is part of the Centre's ongoing work to promote process safety.
