Sample Preparation and Analysis of Materials in Lithium-Ion Battery Production Using Batch Microwave Digestion

CEM GmbH

Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are essential for modern technologies, from smartphones to electric vehicles. The demand for lithium and other metals used in the production of Li-ion batteries is steadily increasing. Accurate determination of the purity of anode and cathode materials, as well as lithium sources, is crucial for the performance and safety of these batteries.

In this Application Note, we present advanced digestion protocols for microwave digestion that enable efficient and comprehensive analysis of various materials. The higher temperatures achieved through microwave digestion lead to more accurate results in the analysis of trace metals.

We describe the application of the MARS 6™ system and the use of ICP-OES (Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy) to optimize sample preparation. Through practical examples, we demonstrate how the quality of materials can be secured and impurities minimized to enhance the efficiency and lifespan of lithium-ion batteries.

Topic world Digestion

Sample digestion is a critical step in chemical analysis that often determines the success or failure of an investigation. It involves the targeted transformation and preparation of a sample to make the components of interest accessible for analysis. Various methods such as thermal, chemical or enzymatic digestion are used to dissolve matrix components, remove unwanted components and release target substances.
