03-10-2010: Chemical engineers must work more closely with other scientists and engineers according to Tadafumi Adschiri, a professor at Tohuku University, Japan who was confirmed as the 30,000th member of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE).

Adschiri, a professor at the university’s advanced institute for materials research says that the function of the chemical engineer is changing: “Part of my role at Tohuku University is to explore the fusion of chemical engineering research with other disciplines including chemistry, biology, medical research, material science and maths.

“The role of the chemical engineer will become more important in the coming years, especially in relation to the fusion of these different disciplines.” says Adschiri.

Adschiri studied chemical engineering at Tokyo University and says that many of the major problems chemical engineers can solve needs fusion of disciplines: “Green energy, the environment, health and medical care and functional materials are all important issues and chemical engineering will be important to all of them.”

Adschiri was confirmed as the 30,000th current member of IChemE following his successful application to join the Institution as a Fellow. His registration came more than two decades after his first interaction with IChemE: “It is wonderful news and I’m happy to be the 30,000th member.
