Eastman to Enter into Cellulose Diacetate Compounding JV in China

11-Nov-2010 - China

Eastman Chemical Company announced that it has entered into a joint venture with Mazzucchelli 1849 SPA for the manufacture of compounded cellulose diacetate in Shenzhen, China. Compounded cellulose diacetate (CDA) is a bio-derived material, which is used in various injection molded applications, including but not limited to ophthalmic frames, tool handles and other end use products. Eastman cellulosics are produced from 100 percent renewable softwood materials. Terms of the joint venture were not disclosed.

“Eastman believes that the demand for cellulosic materials will continue to grow,” said Mark Costa, executive vice president, specialty polymers, coatings and adhesives, and chief marketing officer. “This growth is not only fueled by highly innovative segments, such as liquid crystal displays, but also in traditional segments, where design flexibility, physical properties and the increased interest in bio-derived materials play integral roles in the development process.” The company continues to pursue new opportunities for these unique cellulosic applications in its Specialty Plastics segment.
