About Fraunhofer Battery Alliance

High-performance batteries are the key component of mobile and stationary electrically powered applications and are often the most difficult system component to master. In particular, the requirements for the service life and operational reliability of the systems used in the higher energy and performance range place high technical demands on the batteries to be used. The Fraunhofer Battery Alliance deals with both primary and secondary, i.e. rechargeable systems, from the smallest applications, such as button cells, to large stationary systems such as redox flow batteries. Electrical energy storage devices suitable for vehicles in particular must meet a very broad, sometimes contradictory range of requirements, which includes, among other things, parameters such as costs, energy and power density, cycle stability, temperature range and operational safety. In order to make lithium-ion batteries suitable for vehicles, optimization along a whole chain of individual steps is necessary. These steps are almost completely covered by the Fraunhofer Society institutes.
