Arnhem, the Netherlands / Moscow, Russia, June 6, 2002 – Akzo Nobel today announced the official opening of its first decorative coatings factory in Moscow, Russia. The project has created one of the most up-to-date coatings manufacturing sites in the country.

“This investment underscores Akzo Nobel Coatings’ strategy of increasing our market presence in fast-growing areas like Central and Eastern Europe and we believe Russia has huge potential,” said Rudy van der Meer, Member of Akzo Nobel’s Board of Management responsible for Coatings. “Our decorative coatings brands, which include Sadolin®, Crown®, Marshall®, Maestro® and Pinotex®, already hold excellent positions in Russia and its neighboring countries. By opening this factory we will reinforce these positions.”

Peter de Groot, General Manager of Akzo Nobel Decorative Coatings Russia added: “The factory will enable us to meet demand for both high quality paints, and value-for-money paints for the mass market. By combining Russian resources and foreign technology, we will be able to bring our products more effectively to the Russian consumer.”

Located 7 kilometers east of Moscow, on an extensive plot of industrial land in Balashikha, the manufacturing, laboratory, warehousing facilities and administrative offices cover an area of 7,300 m2. Operational since April 2002 the factory currently employs 50 people and the management of the company expects to expand the staff up to 80 over the next three years.
