Muttenz, Switzerland, 19 September 2002 - Bayer (Schweiz) AG is investing about CHF 20 million in the Muttenz plant belonging to Clariant Switzerland. The investment creates the technical prerequisites for expanding production of the broad-spectrum fungicide FLINT.

The Muttenz plant of Bayer (Schweiz) AG, Zurich, has been producing various reaction steps for the active substance of the broad-spectrum fungicide FLINT at Clariant's Muttenz facility since it acquired the business in December 2000. The Bayer CropScience division has now decided to manufacture all production steps at the Muttenz facility of Clariant Switzerland. Bayer takes full responsibility for the production and conforms in full to the safety, environmental protection and health standards of Clariant Switzerland.

The fungicide FLINT is used mainly to combat diseases in fruits, vegetables and ornamental plants. The production plant of Bayer (Schweiz) AG employs 95 people in Muttenz. All told, about 1,200 people work at the Clariant Muttenz facility.

The project includes expansion of tank storage capacity for butyl lithium solution, reactors for conducting chemical reactions and facilities for recycling valuable products and solvents.

The new plant is scheduled to come on stream at the end of 2003.

For François Dennefeld, member of the Board of Management and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Clariant (Schweiz) AG, the investment by Bayer Switzerland represents a firm commitment to manufacturing in Switzerland: "The investment by Bayer not only upgrades the Muttenz facility but also underscores the plant's efficiency."
