Deborah Steelman Joins Eli Lilly and Company as Vice President, Corporate Affairs

Eli Lilly and Company has announced that Deborah Steelman, a leading national expert in health care policy, will join the company as vice president, corporate affairs. In this capacity, she will lead the company's governmental affairs, public policy, external corporate communications, community relations and corporate contributions operations.

"I am delighted to have someone of Deborah Steelman's caliber join our organization. She is one of our nation's most respected and knowledgeable experts in health care policy," said Sidney Taurel, Lilly chairman, president and chief executive officer. "She held a White House staff position under President Reagan and has served with distinction on a number of federal advisory commissions, including the National Bipartisan Commission on the Future of Medicare. Deborah also served as chairman of the Quadrennial Advisory Council on Social Security and Medicare as a presidential appointee by then-President George Bush."

For the past 14 years, Steelman has owned and served as president of Steelman Health Strategies in Washington, D.C. The firm specializes in health policy analysis and advocacy, including Medicare payment and coverage policy, the Medicaid rebate program, and other public and private health care finance issues. The firm's clients have included a number of major pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, as well as the trade association that represents research-based pharmaceutical companies, the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA).

Steelman will become a member of the Lilly senior management team and report directly to Taurel.

Steelman graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Missouri where she also earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) degree in l978.
