Merck KGaA Establishes Legally Independent Company For Its Global Electronic Chemicals Business

13-Mar-2003

Merck KGaA today announced that the company intends to grow its global business with ultrapure chemicals for the semiconductor industry not only through its own efforts, but also via strong alliances and partnerships.

With effect as of January 1, 2003, the company thus transferred its European activities for the semiconductor industry to a legally independent subgroup that is wholly owned by Merck KGaA and has its management company in Darmstadt.

The German subsidiary of this holding company, Merck Electronic Chemicals GmbH, has already started its operations with around 50 employees. In the course of 2003, additional local companies will be established in France, Malaysia and Singapore under the umbrella of Merck Electronic Chemicals Holding. A total of around 550 employees will work for Merck Electronic Chemicals worldwide.

"This step sets the course for a lasting reinforcement of our Electronic Chemicals business," commented Prof. Dr. Thomas Schreckenbach, member of the Executive Board of Merck KGaA with responsibility for the Chemicals business sector. "This legally independent company will be able to react more quickly and with greater flexibility to the needs of our customers, and it already meets all the necessary requirements to do this together with new partners."

Merck KGaA generated global sales of EUR 192 million in 2002 with Electronic Chemicals, one of five divisions in its Chemicals business sector.

The Electronic Chemicals business includes ultra high purity process chemicals used primarily for the production of microchips under cleanroom conditions by customers in the semiconductor industry. Due to the consistently high quality, reliability and safe delivery of these products, Merck is one of the preferred partners within the industry and has a strong market position in Europe and Asia.
