Dow Polystyrene Reaches 1,000,000,000 Pound Milestone at Schkopau Site

06-Aug-2003

Just four years since it began operating at the Schkopau site of Buna Sow Leuna Olefinverbund GmbH (BSL), Dow's largest single-unit polystyrene train has produced 1,000,000,000 pounds of STYRON polystyrene resins, a landmark reached on July 30, 2003. The 130,000-ton capacity polystyrene plant opened on July 1, 1999, as Dow's sixth polystyrene production facility in Europe bringing its total European polystyrene capacity to 635,000 tons.

"This is an exciting and significant milestone for our plant in Central Germany," said Brett Simpson, product marketing manager for Dow Polystyrene in Europe. "Our integrated polystyrene infrastructure at Schkopau has the flexibility to produce all of our company's general purpose and high-impact polystyrene grades, and is strategically positioned to meet the growing demands of the Central and Eastern European markets."

Dow's polystyrene plant is integrated into its plastics complex at Schkopau, where six polymer plants share a common control room, logistics area and laboratory for quality control.
