WACKER Reorganizes Burghausen Plant's Polysilicon Sales

08-Dec-2003

The Munich-based WACKER Group is restructuring its polysilicon sales activities. Starting next year, an independent organizational unit will take over these responsibilities, which were previously handled by WACKER Siltronic. In addition to polysilicon production, Polysilicon & Silica will be in charge of the marketing side, too. The WACKER unit will be renamed WACKER POLYSILICON and will start to sell hyperpure polysilicon direct to customers from January 1, 2004.

"The measure aims to create a single point of contact for customers, as well as to expand our customer base," stated Ewald Schindlbeck, Vice President of Polysilicon & Silica (PU-SV) and future head of WACKER POLYSILICON. "Decoupling the polysilicon marketing and sales activities from WACKER SILTRONIC and bundling them with the production will help to serve the various polysilicon market segments even better and to expand the customer base," he added.

At its Burghausen plant, WACKER has been producing hyperpure silicon for the semiconductor and photovoltaics sectors for over 50 years. As one of the major manufacturers of polycrystalline silicon, the Group supplies leading wafer and solar cell companies - including WACKER SILTRONIC, which is a global producer of hyperpure silicon wafers for the semiconductor sector.

Production capacities are being boosted to meet the expected future growth in polycrystalline silicon demand. By mid-2004, the Group plans to increase production from 4,200 metric tons to a total of 5,000 metric tons of polysilicon per year.

By building a pilot plant for granular solar silicon (estimated completion date: summer 2004), WACKER is gaining new process options to manufacture silicon crystals for the photovoltaics sector.
