CROMPTON'S PETROLEUM ADDITIVES BUSINESS TO EXPAND SYNTON® PAO CAPACITY IN ELMIRA, CANADA

25-May-2001

Crompton Corporation's Petroleum Additives business has announced plans to expand production capacity for its Synton Poly Alpha Olefin (PAO) product line at its Elmira, Ontario, Canada manufacturing facility. This capacity increase is expected to come on line in the third quarter 2001.

"The growth in the use of high viscosity PAOs is being fueled by new developments in the industrial and automotive lubricant markets," said Dr. Sean P. O'Connor, vice president of Crompton Petroleum Additives. "This expansion is part of our long-term business strategy to meet growing worldwide customer requirements. In fact, customer demand for the product has been so strong that this represents our sixth expansion since 1996 at the Elmira facility."

Synton PAO, a high performance synthetic lubricant that is a replacement for mineral oil in a wide variety of automotive and industrial lubricant applications, offers improved low temperature properties and thermal stability. The Elmira site, which has been manufacturing PAOs since 1980, features state-of-the-art process controls and additional inventory storage to help improve responsiveness to customer orders, as well as a variety of packaging options.

Crompton's Petroleum Additives business offers one of the most comprehensive lines of components to lubricant additive formulators and manufacturers of products for the transportation, industrial, grease, and fuels markets. Uniroyal Chemical and Witco lubricant components allow customers to formulate products that meet demanding new industry specifications driven by higher performance and advanced environmental requirements.
