ATOFINA has signed a letter of intent for the sale of its Chlorotoluenes production activity

08-Jun-2001

ATOFINA's Chlorotoluenes and derivatives production activity concerns three sites in Europe: Widnes in the United Kingdom, which houses the Toluene chlorination plants and the production plants for most chlorotoluene derivatives, as well as Loison (Pas-de-Calais) and Epierre (Savoie) in France which produce the remaining derivatives.

Under the terms of the agreement, ATOFINA will sell to Tessenderlo Group the entire Widnes site whilst retaining the Loison and Epierre plants, both of these to be supplied with chlorotoluenes from Tessenderlo for the production of derivatives.

The Loison site recently brought on stream a new benzoyl peroxide plant, and will therefore see its competitiveness strenghtened in terms of raw materials for organic peroxides, an area in which ATOFINA is a world leader.

This acquisition should enable Tessenderlo Group, a worldwide player in these markets, to expand both its geographical coverage and its product range. Tessenderlo Group currently produces chlorotoluenes in Tessenderlo (Limburg, Belgium), Calais (Pas-de-Calais, France), Maastricht (the Netherlands), and Taile (China).

This project is subject to the notification of and consultation with personnel representative bodies, and to the approval of the relevant authorities.
