Foundry Products Division of Ashland Specialty Chemical Introduces MAGNAsetTM No-Bake Binder for Ferrous Casters

28-Nov-2000

The Foundry Products Division of Ashland Specialty Chemical Company has developed and introduced the MAGNAset no-bake binder, answering the foundry industry's call for improved productivity, better casting and lower costs while also meeting increasingly stringent environmental regulations. Utilizing furfuryl alcohol, Ashland's innovative MAGNAset no-bake binder bridges the gap between furan and phenolic urethane no-bake binders to offer the advantages of high casting quality, fast strip time and low emissions.

"Ashland Foundry Products Division developed the MAGNAset no-bake binder to be flexible in its applications," said Eric Ireland, product manager. "It offers a solution for phenolic no-bake users needing improved environmental qualities; furan users needing rapid through-cure and quick strips; furan users needing to lower their catalyst levels, and thus sulfur content, due to environmental concerns; and foundries running multiple no-bakes in need of a single system for reclamation purposes."

Although achieving the high casting quality of a premium furan binder, MAGNAset can be stripped much earlier due to its rapid through-cure, high up-front tensile development and excellent mold surface finish. This faster cure allows for quicker handling of the core or mold, adding a significant boost to productivity.

On the environmental side, MAGNAset offers the same low emissions, smoke and odor as a standard furan binder. Foundries not needing the fast cure speed of the MAGNAset binder can also lower their catalyst usage, further reducing sulfur levels and emissions.

"As a technology leader in the metal casting industry, Ashland is pleased to once again be at the forefront of pioneering new advances that help foundries around the world attain higher levels of success," said Michael D. Killian, vice president and general manager, Foundry Products Division, Ashland Specialty Chemical Company. "Our commitment to finding solutions for our customers means that we are not through yet. As the challenges keep coming, this dedication along with our comprehensive product line and technical support services will be the foundation for carrying the industry forward."
