BASF uses Elemica for contract buying and selling

30-Aug-2001

BASF Aktiengesellschaft has successfully completed a first transaction that also links its purchasing department with Elemica. As a result, BASF now uses the world's largest chemicals e-marketplace for both contract buying and selling in Europe and the United States. In the future, a contract by which Bayer AG will supply BASF with monochlorobenzene will processed via the Internet. Monochlorobenzene is used as a precursor in the production of vitamin A and pharmaceutical active ingredients and as a catalyst in various plants at BASF's Ludwigshafen site. The transfer of contract processing to Elemica is the starting shot for BASF to expand its buying activities at Bayer via the marketplace.

BASF is also increasing its sales through Elemica. For example, a contract for BASF to supply formic acid to Bayer will now be processed via Elemica. The product is used in a variety of applications such as the production of textile chemicals and as a raw material for coatings. This step will be followed by others: In the future, BASF plans to conduct its entire contract business with Bayer in the area of chemicals stepwise through Elemica.

These contracts significantly extend BASF's network with Elemica and make the company one of the marketplace's most important users. BASF conducted its first transactions via Elemica in Europe and the United States in spring this year.
