Successful start of new e-business system at DSM

13-Dec-2001

DSM has successfully completed the first transactions through the online store that forms part of its new Corporate eBusiness Platform. The transactions involved DSM Coating Resins' major European distribution partner Internatio N.V. (Mechelen, Belgium) "e-ordering" from DSM coating resins through a web browser interface. The advanced Asera e-ordering technology used for this purpose enables the transaction data to be fed directly into DSM's internal back-end systems. In August this year DSM made a start on the creation of a comprehensive e-business infrastructure offering customers and suppliers better facilities for doing business with DSM over the Internet.

"Online ordering, online order status review and online technical support are valuable new services that we offer to customers," says Bernard van Schaik, director of the DSM Coating Resins business group. "Through the addition of this channel, we give them a new choice of working with us and customers can obtain easier access to our broad range of products."

Says Johan Scholten, director of Internatio N.V.: "As a customer we highly appreciate this new channel. The online option satisfies our need to quickly access DSM's product portfolio and execute transactions."

"In setting up an overall e-business infrastructure we are building upon experience gained in many e-business pilots over the past eighteen months, including our successful participation in the e-marketplaces Omnexus and Elemica," says Ton Geurts, Program Manager DSM eBusiness Sell Side. "Some of our units currently handle up to 15% of their sales through online channels, but once the DSM e-business platform is in place DSM will really be able to reap the benefits of doing business online with both customers and suppliers."

DSM envisions that in 2003 a significant percentage of its activities will be conducted and supported through web-enabled tools. Over the past year the company has made considerable progress in realizing its ambitious strategic goals in the field of e-business.

The integration platform is designed for both the sell side and the buy side and will also support internal processes. The first phase of the project covers the basic infrastructure and the sell side, offering DSM customers the possibility to perform a full range of commercial activities such as online ordering and automatic transmission of transactions. The web browser functionality (Asera technology) has been activated for DSM Coating Resins and includes system-to-system connectivity (webMethods technology) for linking directly to customers' internal systems. Later this month the platform will also link directly to e-marketplaces such as Elemica. Accenture supports the implementation of this e-business infrastructure project.
