Diagnostic systems:
Rhonda LabDisk platform
Customized point-of-need solutions for molecular diagnostics
Hahn-Schickard-Gesellschaft für angewandte Forschung e.V.
Fully automated workflows: Closed, contamination-free microfluidic cartridge
Specific molecular detection: Nucleic acid and/or immune diagnostics
From concept to scalable production: R&D support, assay development, prototyping, ISO 13485
From assay development to CE-IVD cartridge production
On the basis of the LabDisk technology the Rhonda Platform enables fully automated sample-to-result molecular diagnostics as well as standardized sample preparation workflows. In addition to classical PCR-based diagnostics, the system automates nucleic acid extraction, purification and reagent handling for downstream processes such as next-generation sequencing (NGS) library preparation and mass spectrometry-based proteomic analysis. This makes Rhonda suitable for point-of-care deployment and advanced laboratory environments requiring reproducible, miniaturized and scalable workflows.
At the core of the platform are customizable LabDisk cartridges. These centrifugal microfluidic cartridges integrate liquid or dried reagents, precise µL-scale fluid control, thermal processing, amplification and multiplex detection within a closed, contamination-free disposable format. The modular cartridge architecture enables adaptation to molecular diagnostics, multiplex PCR panels, immunoassays and dedicated genomics or proteomics sample preparation protocols.
The cartridge development is driven by Hahn-Schickard’s engineering and bioanalytical expertise. Our institute combines long-standing experience in molecular diagnostics, digital PCR (dPCR), real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR), Mediator Probe PCR (MP-PCR), isothermal amplification technologies (LAMP, RPA), high-multiplex assay development, multi-analyte immunoassays, SNP and mutation detection, genotyping, oncology diagnostics, liquid biopsy testing. We further develop electrochemical biosensors and advanced fluorescence detection systems for sensitive biomarker quantification.
To accelerate product realization, Hahn-Schickard offers in-house rapid prototyping and microfabrication for microfluidic chips and cartridges. Using polymer prototyping in COC, COP and PMMA and high-precision CNC micromachining, assay concepts are transferred into functional prototypes and pilot-series products. ISO 13485-certified pilot manufacturing enables scalable cartridge production (with injection molded parts) including reagent integration, sealing, quality control and packaging.
The Rhonda hardware family provides flexible detection and automation. The Rhonda Player supports PCR applications with up to four fluorescence channels for multiplex real-time analysis. The Rhonda Lite is optimized for isothermal assays, offering fluorescence readout and future-ready image-based signal detection. Together, the systems address oncology, liquid biopsy, extracellular vesicle analytics, genotyping, prenatal and emergency diagnostics such as rapid biomarker testing in suspected myocardial infarction. In addition, the platform excels in automating complex NGS and mass spectrometry sample preparation workflows.
Beyond cartridge-based systems, Hahn-Schickard develops customized liquid handling solutions and laboratory automation platforms. This includes intelligent reagent dispensing, automated sample preparation and tailored systems for 3D cell culture, spheroid and organoid handling, supporting translational research, regenerative medicine and drug development.
By combining microfluidic LabDisk technology, bioanalytical R&D, rapid prototyping, assay development, liquid handling automation and ISO 13485-certified manufacturing, the Rhonda Platform bridges the gap between research innovation and market-ready diagnostic and sample preparation solutions.
