Short description

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) conducts research in the sectors energy, health, and matter. It focuses its research on the following topics: • How can energy and resources be used efficiently, safely, and sustainably? • How can malignant tumors be visualized and characterized more precisely and treated effectively? • How do matter and materials behave in strong fields and at the smallest dimensions? To answer these scientific questions, several large-scale research facilities provide unique research opportunities. These facilities are also accessible to external users. The HZDR has been a member of the Helmholtz Association, Germany’s largest research organization, since 2011. It has four locations in Dresden, Leipzig, Freiberg, and Grenoble and employs about 1,000 people – approx. 500 of whom are scientists including 150 doctoral candidates.

Milestone for laser technology: Huge research machine much smaller and cost-effective

Extremely intense light pulses generated by free-electron lasers (FELs) are versatile tools in research. Particularly in the X-ray range, they can be deployed to analyze the details of atomic structures of a wide variety of materials. Until now, FELs such as the European XFEL in Germany are ... more

Water that simply will not freeze

Water that simply will not freeze, no matter how cold it gets – a research group involving the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) has discovered a quantum state that could be described in this way. Experts from the Institute of Solid State Physics at the University of Tokyo in Japa ... more

The color play of mineral resources

Dr. René Booysen researches the exploration of mineral deposits. At the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF), belonging to the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), she develops sensor-based exploration techniques to identify resources in a non-invasive way.
