Degussa: No. 1 among European chemical companies in Dow Jones Sustainability Index

No. 2 worldwide

16-Sep-2002
September 13, 2002 Degussa AG of Dusseldorf holds first place among European chemical firms in the Dow Jones sustainability Index (DJSI), currently the most important of its kind. The company has also been accorded second place in the global chemical sector in the DJSI World ratings. This shows that Degussa has significantly improved on the good rankings it already achieved last year. The DJSI indexes were introduced in 1999 by SAM Indexes GmbH (SAM) in collaboration with STOXX Ltd., both of Zurich. Degussa has been included in the indexes for two years. Its foremost places in the new European and world rankings apply as of September 23, 2002. "We are proud of the excellent places we have achieved in these indexes, and see this as confirmation of our corporate policy. We will continue to consistently implement our sustainability approaches in future," states Degussa Management Board Chairman Prof. Utz-Hellmuth Felcht. At Degussa, sustainable management is an integral component of business processes throughout the Group. Particular importance is attached to sustainability reporting, the means by which the Group provides information about its economic, social and ecological development. Moreover, corporate governance holds a significant place in Degussa's management philosophy. A large number of the requirements, recommendations and suggestions listed in the planned German Corporate Governance Code have long been normal practice at Degussa, a fact that met with particular acknowledgement in the review of the SAM and STOXX rankings. The European DJSI index is based on the Dow Jones STOXX 600 Index, and involves selection by SAM and STOXX of the top 20 percent of the 600 companies concerned in terms of social, ecological and economic criteria. The same procedure applies to the Dow Jones Global, which covers 2,500 companies. In this case, SAM and STOXX select the top 10 percent in terms of sustainability criteria for Dow Jones Sustainability World listing.
