BASF expands capacity of Polymer Dispersion Plant in Indonesia

01-Oct-2002

09/30/02 - BASF is to increase the capacity of its polymer dispersion plant located in Cengkareng, Indonesia, from the current annual 50,000 metric tons to 95,000 metric tons. Design and engineering work has already commenced and completion is slated for early 2004. The total investment cost is estimated at about USD $10 million.

BASF Indonesia currently produces both acrylic and carboxylated styrene butadiene dispersions in Cengkareng and the new capacity will allow for increased production of both polymer types. Polymer dispersions are the largest locally produced product line for BASF Indonesia and are widely used in the paper, paint, textile, adhesives and construction industries.

Expanding the polymer dispersion plant at Cengkareng is meant to maintain BASF's presence in Indonesia. The investment is also part of BASF's strategic plan to steadily consolidate and strengthen the foundation of its Asian operations.

Part of BASF's Functional Polymers division, which in 2001 achieved global sales of EUR 2.5 billion, dispersions are also produced in several other Asia Pacific countries such as China, Japan, India, Australia and the Philippines. The region accounted for 16% of the divisions sales in 2001.
