15-Nov-2002

The Dow Chemical Company today announced that Slovnaft, a.s., has selected the UNIPOL(TM) PP Process for a new polypropylene production facility at its Bratislava, Slovakia petrochemical site. Startup of the 255,000 tons-per-year plant is scheduled for early in 2005. Linde-KCA Dresden will engineer and construct the plant.

The new plant will produce a full range of homopolymers and random and impact copolymers. Its output will supply the growing European markets for packaging film, fiber, and automotive parts. "After evaluating several technologies, Slovnaft believes that its regional competitiveness in the polymer markets in the future will be most assured by the selection of the UNIPOL PP Process," said company spokesman Lubomir Zitnan. John Dearborn, vice president of Technology Licensing and Catalyst for Dow, said "We’re pleased that Slovnaft has chosen to build the fifth polypropylene plant in Europe to operate the UNIPOL PP process and we’re eager to play a role in the growth of its petrochemicals business. Slovnaft’s selection of the UNIPOL PP Process validates the technology advancements we’ve made since Union Carbide was acquired by Dow and our commitment to provide technology leadership." Slovnaft joins more than 30 other UNIPOL PP licensees, who today account for more than five million metric tons of polypropylene production worldwide.
