Charles W. Burson Named General Counsel for Monsanto

ST. LOUIS, March 21, 2001 — Charles W. Burson, 56, will become General Counsel for Monsanto Company, effective April 9. He will also be nominated as an Executive Vice President and Secretary of the company at the April meeting of Monsanto's board of directors.
Burson succeeds R. William Ide III, 60, who had previously announced his plans to resign. Ide will continue to serve the company during a transition period.
Burson has 30 years of legal experience, including service in the private and public sectors in litigation, commercial and corporate law. Until January, he served in the White House as Assistant to the President and Chief of Staff to Vice President Al Gore. Earlier, Burson was Counsel to the Vice President. He also served as state Attorney General of Tennessee for eight years and is a past president of the National Association of Attorneys General.
Burson holds a B.A. degree in political science with honors and distinction from the University of Michigan, a M.A. degree from Cambridge University in England, and a J.D. from Harvard University Law School. He and his wife, Bunny Cornell Burson, have two daughters, Clare and Kate.
