Merck and Toyo Aluminium Produce New Hiding Effect Pigments

20-Oct-2003

Merck KGaA will launch innovative hiding effect pigments in a joint development with Toyo Aluminium K.K. (Osaka, Japan). The first effect pigment from this cooperation will be reddish-orange in color and will be achieved with aluminum flakes coated by ferric oxide. The product will mainly be focused on the automotive paint market. The initial sample is planned to be available in the U.S., Europe and Japan within this year.

The new pigment is achieved with hiding power and high color intensity through a combination of Merck's water-phase coating technology and highly anti-corrosive aluminum flakes produced by passivation technique developed jointly by Merck and Toyo Aluminium.

The aim of the joint development is to launch innovative hiding effect pigments into the market by merging the aluminum technology owned by Toyo Aluminium and the pearl pigments technology owned by Merck KGaA. Reddish-orange is the first color and more will follow in the future.

These innovative hiding effect pigments are completing Merck's range of semi-transparent effect pigments, such as Xirallic and Colorstream, which have gained high acceptance and are already broadly used in automotive coatings.
