Abbott Names Executive to Lead U.S. Pharmaceutical Business

28-May-2001

Abbott Laboratories today announced that David B. Goffredo has been named senior vice president, pharmaceutical operations by the board of directors of Abbott Laboratories effective June 1, 2001.

Goffredo, 48, joined Abbott in 1987. He has held several management positions in Abbott's domestic pharmaceutical business and, most recently, served as vice president, European operations with responsibility for the pharmaceutical, nutritional and hospital businesses in this region. Goffredo holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from Rowan College and a master's degree in management from Northwestern University's Kellogg Graduate School of Management.

Goffredo will report to Dr. Jeffrey M. Leiden, executive vice president, pharmaceuticals and chief scientific officer. He replaces Arthur J. Higgins, who announced yesterday that he would assume the position of president and chief executive officer of ENZON, Inc.

"Dave Goffredo is an outstanding leader, and will do a superb job as the head of our Pharmaceutical Products Division (PPD)," said Miles D. White, Abbott's chairman and chief executive officer. "We're fortunate to have the talent to be able to fill senior positions with such highly qualified internal candidates.

"I'd also like to thank and congratulate Arthur Higgins for his many contributions to Abbott over the past 14 years," said White. "As the head of PPD, Arthur led a very successful strategy to return the division to double-digit growth. As a result, this business is strong today and positioned for continued success. We wish Arthur all the best in his new position."
