Kemira GrowHow proposes to close down production in Fredericia, Denmark

06-May-2004
Kemira GrowHow Oy has asked the Kemira GrowHow A/S Board to initiate negotiations to look at possibilities to close production in the company's production unit in Fredericia during this summer. If decided, the closure would mean job losses for about 300 persons. The negotiations with the local Works Council will start immediately. A closure would mean stopping all chemical production at the site. The units that would be closed include nitric acid, potassium nitrate, dicalcium phosphate and NPK fertilizer plants. Kemira GrowHow aims under any circumstances to continue the Fredericia site as a warehouse and a distribution centre for its customers in Denmark. In any case customers will be served with same products and services as earlier. If production closes in Fredericia the products will be sourced from Kemira GrowHow Group's other production units. Kemira GrowHow A/S has been suffering from unsatisfactory financial performance continuously over several years. Despite major internal improvement efforts, the company has not been able to improve the result to acceptable level. Also it has not been possible to produce a feasible future plan to reach the financial targets set by Kemira GrowHow. The possible closure will concentrate Kemira GrowHow Group's production operations on fewer and more competitive sites, and will improve earnings substantially.
