Degussa sets up representative office in Berlin

Intensive political dialog

12-May-2004
Degussa AG of Dusseldorf, Germany, has set up a representative office in Berlin at Friedrichstraße 171, in the Mitte district. The premises are shared with the existing representative office of RAG Aktiengesellschaft, Essen, the Germany-based energy and chemical group due to become the majority shareholder in Degussa AG on June 1, 2004. Degussa Management Board Chairman Prof. Utz-Hellmuth Felcht states: "Contacts between the business sector and politics cannot be intensive enough. Our pluralistic society naturally has industrial associations to represent the interests of their member companies towards legislators and the government in proven manner. The German Chemical Industry Association (VCI) does outstanding work in this respect. Yet the companies themselves should participate in political dialog and take on greater sociopolitical responsibility. Our Berlin office will make an important contribution in this regard." The head of the new Degussa representative office is Karlheinz Maldaner (56), who since 1998 had run the office maintained in the German capital by Deutsche Telekom. Previous to this, he held a managing position at the Berlin offices of the DaimlerChrysler Group, and has also filled senior functions in politics. Maldaner will be supported by Dr. Artur Müller (41), who has worked for Degussa since 1995 in the Feed Additives Business Unit. Following tasks in technical customer consulting in several European markets, Dr. Müller began to build up the business unit's political relations work in Berlin and Brussels in 2001.
