Ashland Specialty Chemical Announces Management Changes

Ashland Specialty Chemical Company has announced that, effective immediately, Michael W. Swartzlander has been named vice president and general manager of the Foundry Products Division, and Elizabeth A. Potts has been named vice president of Business Development.

James A. Duquin, president of Ashland Specialty Chemical Company, made the announcement.

In his new position, Swartzlander will assume responsibility for the Foundry Products Division’s domestic and international operations, which include manufacturing and distribution locations throughout the world. The division is a leading manufacturer and supplier of resins, coatings and other specialty chemicals to the worldwide foundry industry, including sand-binding resins systems, refractory coatings, release agents, engineered sand additives and riser sleeves. Swartzlander will be based in Dublin, Ohio, and report to Duquin.

He previously served as vice president of Ashland Specialty Chemical Company’s Business Development group. Prior to that, he served as business director for the company’s Electronic Chemicals Division’s operations in Asia. He joined Ashland in 1989 as a manager in the Business Development group for Ashland Inc.’s chemical operations. During his tenure with Ashland, he has served in various positions of increasing responsibility. These include marketing manager and later director of marketing and technical services for the Foundry Products Division, international business manager for Ashland Specialty Chemical’s Composite Polymers Division, and business director for the Electronic Chemicals Division’s operations in Asia.

A native of Butler, Pa., Swartzlander earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Carnegie-Mellon University and a master’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Delaware.

Potts will assume responsibility for Ashland Specialty Chemical Company’s business development group. In her new role, she will continue to facilitate the company’s growth goals to add significant new specialty chemical businesses via internal growth considering complementary businesses, technology development, alliances, and strategic partnerships. She will be based in Dublin, Ohio, and report to Duquin.

Potts previously served as business director for Ashland Specialty Chemical’s Electronic Chemicals Division’s process chemicals business. She joined the company in 1996 as quality director and also has served as manufacturing manager for Electronic Chemicals. Prior to joining Ashland she worked in various management positions for companies such as ABS Quality Evaluations, Inc., Caterpillar Tractor, Babcock and Wilcox and American Gas Association Laboratories.

A native of Elmhurst, Ill., she holds a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois and a master’s degree in business administration from Ashland University.
